The Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received a 911 call on Thursday evening reporting the hikers as overdue. The hikers managed to contact MRA by phone around 6:40 p.m., informing rescuers they were off-route in the Haystack Meadows area but believed they were descending toward the trailhead. Despite being well-prepared and experienced, the hikers’ GPS location could not be determined due to challenging terrain.

The Thomas Lakes Trail, an 8.1-mile out-and-back trail known for its difficulty and an elevation gain of 1,650 feet, had been their intended route.

Early on Friday, at 5:15 a.m., dispatch reopened the case when the hikers had still not returned to their vehicle. MRA promptly deployed seven teams consisting of 15 members to search the area. One of the hikers was located at the trailhead by 9:55 a.m., and the second was found about two miles from the trailhead at 10:05 a.m. The second hiker was assisted down the trail by MRA.

Both hikers were evaluated by paramedics from Roaring Fork Fire and Rescue at the scene and declined further medical treatment. The entire rescue operation concluded by 12:15 p.m., involving efforts from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Mountain Rescue Aspen, Roaring Fork Fire and Rescue, and concerned family members.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and MRA emphasize the importance of detailed route planning, carrying essential equipment and technology, and being prepared for unexpected situations, especially when venturing into backcountry areas where immediate rescue is not guaranteed.
