The accident took place in the highly technical Class V section of the river below the Pine Creek access point. According to witnesses, the kayaker’s boat became trapped in a powerful churning rapid at the bottom of Pine Creek Rapid. Despite the swift action of his companions, who managed to pull him to shore and attempt CPR, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. The kayaker was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Chaffee County Coroner.
The Chaffee County dispatch center received the distress call at 5:30 p.m., prompting an immediate response from multiple agencies, including Chaffee County Fire, Chaffee County EMS, Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, and CPW’s AHRA.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim,” said Tom Waters, AHRA park manager. “This appears to be a tragic accident.” He noted that all three kayakers were experienced in challenging whitewater conditions and had appropriate equipment for this Class V section of whitewater. The river temperature was 53 degrees, and the river was running high due to the peak spring run-off from snowmelt.
Waters urged the public to check river conditions by calling the AHRA before embarking on any trips and to consider using commercial rafting companies to ensure safety.
The AHRA, managed through a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, has been providing recreation opportunities and caring for the significant natural resources of the upper Arkansas River valley since 1989.

Safety Tips for Kayaking on Class V Rapids
Navigating Class V rapids requires advanced skills and preparation. Here are some safety tips to ensure a safer kayaking experience:
Check River Conditions: Always verify the river conditions, including water temperature and flow rate, before setting out. Spring run-off can significantly alter river dynamics.
Use Appropriate Equipment: Ensure you have the right gear for Class V rapids, including a properly fitted helmet, life jacket, and a kayak designed for challenging whitewater.
Never Paddle Alone: Always kayak with a group and maintain clear communication. Ensure everyone is experienced and knows the route.
Learn Rescue Techniques: Familiarize yourself with swift water rescue techniques and carry essential safety gear such as throw ropes and a first aid kit.
Stay Updated on Weather: Weather changes can impact river conditions rapidly. Stay informed about weather forecasts and be prepared for sudden changes.
Consider Professional Guides: For those less experienced or unfamiliar with a specific river section, hiring a professional guide or joining a commercial rafting trip can enhance safety.
By following these safety tips, kayakers can help prevent accidents and ensure a more enjoyable and secure experience on the water.
