Biden Administration Finalizes New Public Land Protections for Colorado Thompson Divide

WASHINGTON D.C. – In a landmark move for environmental and public land conservation, the Biden-Harris administration announced the finalization of protections for the Thompson Divide area in Colorado. This significant action underscores the administration’s dedication to preserving one of the state’s most valued landscapes, renowned for its rich ranching heritage, vital wildlife habitats, and extensive outdoor recreation opportunities.

The Thompson Divide, sprawling across approximately 221,898 acres, is a natural treasure within the heart of Colorado, celebrated for its pristine streams, lush aspen groves, and diverse ecosystems. This area is a crucial habitat for wildlife, a source of clean air and water, and a hub for outdoor enthusiasts engaging in activities such as hiking, fishing, and biking. The preservation efforts align with President Biden’s America the Beautiful initiative, aiming to conserve at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.

Thompson Divide Withdrawal Map

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland signed Public Land Order 7939, withdrawing these lands from future mineral development, a move that effectively protects the Thompson Divide’s natural resources and scenic beauty for the next two decades, with the possibility of renewal. This decision comes after extensive public involvement and reflects a strong commitment to locally led conservation efforts, embodying a collective endeavor to maintain the region’s ecological integrity and recreational values.

The withdrawal does not impact existing rights or activities on private lands but ensures the long-term preservation of the area’s environmental and recreational assets. This initiative has garnered widespread support from a diverse group of stakeholders, including farmers, ranchers, conservation groups, and local governments, who have advocated for the protection of the Thompson Divide for years.

The conservation of the Thompson Divide serves as a testament to the Biden-Harris administration’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding natural landscapes for future generations. This measure not only protects the region’s ecological and scenic values but also supports the local recreation economy, which is vital to the livelihoods of surrounding communities.

As the administration continues to prioritize conservation efforts, the protection of the Thompson Divide marks a significant achievement in the nationwide push to preserve America’s natural beauty and biodiversity. This historic decision reinforces the notion that through united efforts and strong leadership, it is possible to achieve lasting environmental conservation goals, ensuring that precious natural resources and landscapes remain intact for generations to come.
