Missing Kayaker Recovered in Lon Hagler Reservoir

Body of Missing Colorado Kayaker Recovered from Lon Hagler Reservoir

LOVELAND, COLORADO — The body of a missing kayaker was recovered from Lon Hagler Reservoir on Wednesday evening, concluding an intensive search operation that began earlier this week. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Marine Evidence Recovery Team, with assistance from multiple local agencies, located the adult male kayaker who had been reported missing on Tuesday.

The search operation, led by the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and supported by Larimer County Search and Rescue, Larimer County Emergency Services, Larimer County Department of Natural Resources, Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, and Poudre Fire Authority, was initiated after the man failed to return from a kayaking trip. Family members indicated he planned to be on the reservoir in the late afternoon of June 25.

Upon recovery, it was noted that the kayaker was not wearing a life jacket, a critical safety measure that could have potentially prevented this tragedy. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the kayaker following notification of next of kin.

The incident underscores the importance of safety precautions during water recreation. CPW officials remind the public to always wear a life jacket while kayaking, paddle boarding, and engaging in other water activities. Additionally, checking weather conditions and water safety advisories for state parks and wildlife areas before heading out is crucial.

Safety Tips for Water Recreation

  1. Wear a Life Jacket: Always wear a properly fitted life jacket. Even strong swimmers can encounter difficulties in open water.

  2. Check Weather Conditions: Weather can change rapidly. Check forecasts and water conditions before heading out.

  3. Inform Someone of Your Plans: Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.

  4. Stay Hydrated and Be Prepared: Bring enough water, snacks, and sun protection. Be aware of your physical limits and the distance you plan to cover.

  5. Know the Area: Familiarize yourself with the body of water you’ll be in. Be aware of potential hazards like strong currents, underwater obstacles, or sudden drop-offs.

  6. Go with a Buddy: Whenever possible, do not go kayaking or paddle boarding alone. Having a partner adds an extra layer of safety.

By following these guidelines, outdoor enthusiasts can help ensure their safety and enjoyment while participating in water-based activities. Read our complete mountains safety guide for more information.
