Gothic Road Camping Guide: Plan Your Visit to Crested Butte, Colorado
Gothic Road is one of the prettiest – and busiest – forest roads in the Crested Butte area. Known for stop-and-go traffic jams amid wildflower blooms and elk herds, it is one of the most difficult spots to snag a campsite in the state. However, with a bit of luck and pre-planning, it is still possible for those who really want to camp along Gothic Road to find a spot.
In this guide I’ll share the available camping opportunities on Gothic Road, tips for finding or reserving a campsite, maps of the area, Leave No Trace tips, and more. Let’s get started with some key details.

Camping Along Gothic Road: Complete Guide
Getting a camping spot along Gothic Road is no easy feat; It requires a lot of pre-planning and a little bit of luck too. Plan a visit and learn what you need to know before you head out there with my guide below.
Camping Area Description
Gothic Road begins north of Crested Butte, where the paved road ends and the gravel begins. It loses a bit of elevation for the first few miles as it passes along the northeast slope of Snodgrass Mountain, with steep drop-offs on your right. This is one of the sketchiest spots on the road – it gets better once you reach the town of Gothic.
This rustic town was once a thriving mining camp full of prospectors. Today it is the home of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, known for their groundbreaking research on wildflowers, weather, and the rocky mountain ecosystem.
Directly after Gothic, you’ll pass the trailhead for the Judd Falls Trail. It is an easy, 2.2 mile trail to a 40-foot waterfall that passes through spectacular wildflower blooms in July. You also get treated to grand views of Gothic Mountain across the valley.
Continue along the road for another two miles past Gothic. You will come to the first set of designated campsites (#1-3) on the left side of the road. These are all first-come, first-serve and have an $18/night fee (payable online or at the main kiosk).
A few hundred feet past the first group of sites is the Gothic Campground. It is also on the left side of the road with 4 campsites, all first-come, first-serve.
The second group of designated campsites (#4-8) are 0.4 miles past the campground. These are again on the left side of the road.
The road gets significantly worse over the next 1.3 miles before you reach the next campgrounds. 4WD is required beyond this point or you may get stuck (or worse!). The fourth group (#9-12) is just beyond and is the highest elevation option. There is a final site (#13) a hundred feet up on the opposite side of the road.
From here, Gothic road continues for another 1.8 miles past Emerald Lake, all the way to the top of Schofield Pass (elevation: 10,721 ft).

Getting There
Gothic Road is accessed from Crested Butte, beginning as 6th street and turning into Gothic Road as it passes through Mt Crested Butte (home to the ski resort). Just north of the town, the road passes a gate area where it shuts down during the winter and turns to gravel. This is what most people consider the start of ‘Gothic Road proper.’
From here, the road continues 9.7 miles to the top of the pass. Here is the distance to major waypoints along the road.

There are tons of fun things to do and places to explore while camping on Gothic Road. Here are some ideas and inspiration to get you started.
Hiking Trails:
- Judd Falls Trail: This 2.2-mile round-trip trail takes you to a beautiful 40-foot waterfall. It’s an easy hike with spectacular wildflower blooms in July and offers grand views of Gothic Mountain. Read my trail guide.

Amenities
As a backcountry area on national forest land, there are very few amenities available along Gothic Road. Come prepared with your own water and supplies.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Vault Toilets: Available at designated campsites and the Gothic Campground, providing basic sanitation facilities.
- Campfire Rings: Metal fire rings are provided at each campsite for safe and contained campfires.
- Picnic Tables: Some campsites include picnic tables for convenient outdoor dining and food preparation.
Water can be gathered from nearby creek but it must be treated or boiled first to kill or filter out parasites and harmful bacteria.

Leave No Trace
When camping in high-altitude environments like Gothic Road, it’s crucial to minimize your impact on the delicate ecosystem. Here are some Leave No Trace (LNT) tips to follow:
- Use Vault Toilets: Always use the available vault toilets to dispose of human waste. High-altitude environments have fragile soils that can take a long time to decompose waste, which can contaminate water sources and harm wildlife.
- Pack Out All Trash: Carry out all trash, including food scraps and biodegradable waste. There are no trash services available, so it’s essential to take everything you bring with you back out.
- Stick to Designated Campsites: Use the designated campsites to avoid trampling vegetation and disturbing wildlife habitats. Straying off the established sites can cause erosion and damage plant life.
- Use a Camp Stove: Instead of building campfires, use a portable camp stove for cooking. If you must have a fire, use the provided metal fire rings and ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving.
- Respect Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from all wildlife and never feed animals. Store food securely to prevent attracting animals to your campsite.
- Minimize Noise: Keep noise levels down to avoid disturbing the natural tranquility and wildlife in the area.

Safety Tips
Gothic Road is a backcountry area with little to no cell service and few modern amenities. Self-reliance and the ability to respond actively during emergencies is critical for the safety of you and your party. Follow these safety best practices while visiting Gothic Road to have a safe and enjoyable camping
- Camp in Designated Sites: Only camp in the designated campsites to minimize environmental impact and ensure compliance with forest regulations.
- Do Not Drive Off-Road: Stay on designated roads and trails to prevent damage to the landscape and protect wildlife habitats.
- Park Only Where Allowed: Use designated parking areas to avoid blocking roads or damaging vegetation.
- Campfires Only in Metal Rings: Use metal fire rings provided at campsites to contain fires and prevent wildfires.
- Keep Dogs Leashed: Keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other campers.
- Use Bathrooms When Possible: Use available vault toilets to properly dispose of human waste and protect water sources.
- Do Not Pick Wildflowers: Leave wildflowers and other natural features undisturbed to preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the area.
- Campsites Must Be Occupied: No site-saving is allowed. You cannot leave your gear in a site unoccupied for more than 24 hours.

DISPERSED CAMPING IS NOT ALLOWED ON GOTHIC ROAD.
You can ONLY camp in a designated campsite with a marked sign and number.
Campfires are allowed but only in metal USFS campfire rings located in each official established campsite and the Gothic Campground.

National Forest Regulations
Follow these US Forest Service rules and regulations while camping in the area:
- Be aware & follow posted regulations on national forest lands.
- Keep noise levels down to avoid stressing wildlife and livestock, as well as other visitors.
- Respect private property.
- Do not carve, chop, cut or damage any live trees.
- Camping is limited to 14 days within any continuous 30-day period.
- Developed campgrounds may not be used when posted closed.
- No camping is allowed within 100 feet of all lakes, streams and developed trails except for designated campsites
- Be sure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving. You are responsible for keeping fires under control.
- Keep dogs and pets under voice control at all times.
- Using or possessing fireworks on national forest land is prohibited.
- Travel only on designated off-highway vehicle routes. Travel slowly through water or mud. Do not make new tracks outside of the roadbed. Obey road closures and locked gates.
- Vehicles must obey posted parking regulations. Unless otherwise posted, one may pull off a road to park.
- Wilderness areas have specific rules and regulations that must be followed in order to protect these areas from our collective impacts
