Colorado is slogging through an unusually warm, dry start. Resorts have relied on brief snowmaking windows, and the foothills and Front Range have felt more like late fall than early winter. Frustrating? Definitely. But there’s a non-obvious upside for backcountry travelers and ski patrollers alike: fewer early-season weak layers lurking at the base of the snowpack.

Why Fewer Early Weak Layers Matter
Colorado’s trickiest avalanche seasons often begin with a small October or early-November storm that sits on cold ground for weeks. That thin snow metamorphoses into faceted, “sugary” grains—classic persistent weak layers—then gets buried by the first big storm cycle. The result is a booby-trapped snowpack that can produce avalanches for weeks or even months.
This year, we may be dodging that setup—so far. As Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) Director Ethan Greene explains, “So far this season, there hasn’t been enough snow to create that potential weak layer” (Summit Daily, Nov. 11, 2025)

What We Need from the Next Storms
From an avalanche perspective, the ideal next step isn’t a single blockbuster storm but a sustained stretch of modest ones that steadily build thickness and strength. Greene puts it plainly: “The best thing from an avalanche perspective is we want it to not snow and then, when it starts snowing, to snow continuously enough to develop a thick and strong snowpack” (Summit Daily).
And later, driving the point home: “We just want it to snow every couple days, 6–10 inches, every few days for a couple weeks. That’s all we’re asking” (Summit Daily). If we transition into that kind of rhythm, the absence of a thin, faceted base now could translate into more stable conditions later.
There are hints we could get exactly that. Joel Gratz of OpenSnow notes that near-term warmth and dryness don’t preclude a pattern shift: “The exact timing and amount of snow is still uncertain, but it appears that most mountains will see multiple chances for snow between now and Thanksgiving week” (OpenSnow, Nov. 10, 2025). If that verifies, it’s the right recipe—frequent refreshes, limited time for surface snow to weaken between storms, and a “right-side-up” pack that gains strength from the ground up.
Of course, this is Colorado—volatility is part of the DNA. As State Climatologist Russ Schumacher reminds us, “Winter in Colorado is pretty complicated… It’s by far the most variable season out of the year, naturally” (CBS Colorado, Nov. 7, 2025). That variability is precisely why the missing early weak base matters. When storms finally return, we’re less likely to bury “landmines” that persist for months or evolve into deep-persistent problems that are hard to manage and slow to heal.

What to do with this silver lining
Use the lull wisely. Keep expectations modest—thin, rocky coverage still means more core shots than face shots and higher injury risk. Protect fragile alpine vegetation by traveling on durable surfaces where snow hasn’t bridged the ground. Dust off your decision-making tools and practice with your beacon, shovel, and probe. Follow CAIC forecasts daily; when the pattern flips, conditions can change quickly, and a foot of new snow on bare ground behaves very differently than a foot on facets.
The bottom line: a snow-starved early November is disappointing for turns in the short term, but if it’s followed by steady, bite-sized storms, it can be a gift for avalanche stability. Patience now may pay off later with a stronger, more predictable mid-winter snowpack—and safer days in Colorado’s high country.
