While cell phones often lose service in remote areas, Family Radio Service (FRS) radios offer a practical backup for hikers, climbers, and outdoor adventurers. To improve communication during search and rescue (SAR) operations, the Colorado Search and Rescue Association (CSAR) has designated FRS Channel 3.0 (462.6125 MHz) as the default emergency channel for backcountry emergencies.

Here’s what you need to know about using FRS radios in the Colorado backcountry and how this simple communication tool could save lives.

FRS radios are small, handheld devices that allow users to communicate across short distances, typically a few miles depending on terrain. Unlike cell phones, FRS radios don’t rely on cellular service, making them a dependable tool for staying connected in remote mountain environments.

  • No License Required: Anyone can use FRS radios without an FCC license.
  • Ease of Use: Simple controls make them beginner-friendly.
  • Short-Range Communication: Ideal for keeping track of group members or reaching nearby hikers.

Common FRS radios include Rocky Talkie 2 Watt Radio and 5 Watt Radios, and many common models sold at retailers like Walmart and Amazon.com.

The Importance of Channel 3.0 in Backcountry Emergencies

CSAR has designated FRS Channel 3.0 (462.6125 MHz) as the official emergency frequency in the Colorado backcountry. During a crisis, SAR teams equipped with FRS radios will monitor this channel upon arriving in the search area after being alerted by 911 dispatch.

Why Channel 3.0?

The three main reasons they chose Channel 3.0 rather than another channel are:

  • Universal Symbolism: “Three” is recognized as a universal distress signal (e.g., three whistle blasts or three gunshots).
  • Simplicity: It’s easy to remember, making it accessible even for inexperienced radio users.
  • Compatibility: All FRS radios can access Channel 3.0 regardless of manufacturer.

How to Use FRS Radios in an Emergency

  1. Call for Help:

    • Switch your radio to Channel 3.0 with no sub-channel.
    • Announce the nature of your emergency and your location (if known).
    • Speak clearly and repeat important details.
  2. Listen for Responses:

    • Other backcountry users monitoring Channel 3.0 may hear your call and contact 911.
    • Stay on the channel unless directed otherwise by responders.
  3. Await Rescue:

    • Keep your radio powered on and maintain radio silence unless you have important updates.

What FRS Radios Don’t Do

While FRS radios are a helpful tool, they have limitations:

  • Limited Range: Expect only 1-5 miles depending on terrain and line-of-sight.
  • No 24/7 Monitoring: SAR teams do not monitor FRS Channel 3.0 unless an operation is underway.
  • Not a Substitute for 911 Alerts: Always attempt to call 911 first if you have cell service.

You Still Need a Satellite Communication Device

While FRS radios are valuable for short-range communication in the backcountry, they are not a substitute for satellite communication devices like the Garmin InReach, SPOT Messenger, or other two-way satellite messengers. 

These devices offer global coverage and direct emergency alert capabilities via satellite, making them essential for serious backcountry adventurers.

Why Use Both?

FRS radios and satellite devices complement each other. FRS radios are excellent for nearby communication with your group or other hikers, while satellite devices provide long-distance emergency connectivity when no one else is within range.

Recommended Setup for Backcountry Safety:

  • Carry an FRS radio set to Channel 3.0 for short-range group and emergency communication.
  • Pack a satellite communication device for long-range SOS alerts and two-way messaging in case of serious emergencies.

Best Practices for Backcountry Radio Use

Proper preparation and smart usage of your FRS radio can significantly improve your chances of staying safe in the Colorado backcountry. Follow these essential best practices to ensure your radio is ready when you need it most.

Pre-Trip Preparation
