History of Steamboat Springs
Steamboat Springs’ history dates back to the early 1800s when the Ute Native Americans inhabited the area, drawn by the healing properties of the natural hot springs. The town got its name from French trappers who thought they heard the chugging sound of a steamboat, which was actually the bubbling of a mineral spring. In 1874, James Crawford and his family became the first permanent settlers, establishing a homestead and laying the foundation for the future town.
The discovery of coal and the arrival of the railroad in 1909 brought significant growth to Steamboat Springs, with more and more people coming to claim land and start farming. Another notable landmark in Steamboat Springs from this period of history is the Moore Barn, built in the 1920s.
This iconic structure, originally constructed to store hay for a cattle farm, has become a well-known symbol of the town’s agricultural heritage. The barn’s distinctive silhouette against the mountain backdrop serves as a reminder of Steamboat Springs’ ranching roots, even as the town evolved into a popular ski destination.
However, it was the introduction of skiing in the early 20th century that truly transformed the town. Norwegian immigrant Carl Howelsen introduced ski jumping in 1914, earning Steamboat the nickname “Ski Town, U.S.A.” The Howelsen Hill Ski Area is named in his honor.

Due to its high elevation, the town experiences significant temperature fluctuations between day and night throughout the year. Be prepared for rapid weather changes and pack accordingly, regardless of the season.
Winters (November to March)
Typically cold and snowy, with average temperatures ranging from 15°F to 35°F (-9°C to 2°C). The area is famous for its abundant snowfall, averaging around 180 inches (457 cm) annually, which creates ideal conditions for winter sports.
Spring (April to May)
A transitional season with variable weather. Temperatures start to warm up, ranging from 30°F to 60°F (-1°C to 16°C), but occasional snowstorms are still possible. Snow remains on the ground at higher elevation until mid-June.
Summers (June to August)
