FRANKTOWN, COLORADO — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is inviting the public to weigh in on the future of Castlewood Canyon State Park as it develops a 10-year management plan. The draft plan, open for review from January 8 to February 9, aims to guide decisions on land use, resource conservation, and visitor experiences for the next decade.
Community members can review the draft and submit comments online via EngageCPW.org or by emailing Isabelle Petersen at isabelle.petersen@state.co.us. CPW will also host two public meetings to explain the draft plan and collect input.
A virtual meeting is scheduled for January 15 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., with registration available here. An in-person meeting will take place on January 22 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Philip & Jerry Miller Library Event Hall B in Castle Rock.
The draft management plan will serve as a policy document and resource for park staff and visitors, ensuring that Castlewood Canyon’s natural resources and recreational opportunities are protected and enhanced.

“Many people have invested a lot of themselves into Castlewood over the years and have formed a deep connection to all the park has to offer,” said Park Manager Larry Butterfield. “The new Park Management Plan will ensure protection of its natural resources along with providing a high-quality visitor experience now and into the future.”
Feedback collected during the public comment period will help refine the draft, with a final plan set to be released later this year.
Castlewood Canyon State Park, located near Franktown, is renowned for its dramatic canyon views, hiking trails, and opportunities for wildlife observation. The plan is part of CPW’s broader effort to ensure that Colorado’s state parks remain vibrant spaces for recreation and conservation for generations to come.
