Injured Skier Rescued Near Barnard Hut by Mountain Rescue Aspen

PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO – An injured skier was rescued from the backcountry near the Barnard Hut early Sunday morning by the all-volunteer Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA) team after activating an SOS message on a Garmin InReach device.

According to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the emergency call came in at approximately 6:15 a.m. The skier, who was staying at the Barnard Hut on Richmond Hill Road—part of the 10th Mountain Division Hut system—reported a foot injury that rendered them unable to ski out to their vehicle.

By 8:45 a.m., a team of four MRA members mobilized on snowmobiles to reach the injured individual. Two additional MRA members remained at the command center to coordinate the mission. The rescuers successfully located the skier, provided assistance, and transported them to safety.

This incident highlights the critical role of Mountain Rescue Aspen, a volunteer organization that responds to backcountry emergencies year-round. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office commended MRA for their swift response and professionalism in ensuring the skier’s safe return.

In a statement, authorities urged backcountry users to assess the physical health and readiness of their group members before embarking on remote trips.

Lessons Learned and Safety Tips

This rescue underscores the importance of preparedness and communication while exploring the backcountry:

  1. Carry a Reliable Communication Device: Tools like the Garmin InReach can be lifesaving, especially in areas without cell service.
  2. Know Your Group’s Physical Limitations: Ensure all members are capable of completing the planned route and be aware of any pre-existing conditions that could worsen in remote areas.
  3. Plan for Contingencies: Always have a plan for emergencies, including knowledge of nearby shelter locations like huts, and ensure your group is equipped for overnight stays in case of delays.

Support local search and rescue teams by purchasing a Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue (COSAR) card. These funds directly support SAR operations. You can buy one at https://cpw.state.co.us/backcountry-search-and-rescue-program.
