LNT and Outdoor Safety Awareness Campaigns: October 2023 Report

Our new ad campaigns are part of our effort to inform, educate, and empower the public to safely and responsibly explore America’s mountains. By reaching outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, and tourists online before they head outdoors, we can prevent search and rescue missions and negative recreational impacts using an upstream approach. As our budget and support grows, we hope to expand these initiative and launch additional campaigns on LNT and PSAR topics like wilderness survival, proper waste disposal, selecting a sustainable campsite, and more.

Here are some initial updates on our two campaigns after their first month of running on Facebook.

1. Leave No Trace Awareness Campaign

Leave No Trace ethics are incredibly important, yet 90% of hikers, campers, and climbers still lack LNT skills, training, and knowledge. Our LNT Awareness Campaign is our first step to change that by creating awareness about these principles and building the foundation for future learning.

The goal is to increase awareness of the seven ‘Do Colorado Right’ principles, which will be followed up with future campaigns focused on in-depth education on each of the seven principles.

CAMPAIGN GOAL:

  • Build awareness about the 7 Care for Colorado Leave No Trace Principles.
  • Educate the public about Leave No Trace practices, tools, skills, and knowledge.

2. Altitude Sickness Education Campaign

Altitude sickness is one of the most unique hazards in Colorado, making it difficult for many visitors to prepare, prevent, identify, and treat it while hiking, camping, and climbing. Our Altitude Sickness Campaign aims to educate Colorado visitors with the knowledge and skills required to prevent, identify, and treat AMS.

We selected Altitude Sickness because it is a risk multiplier and increases your risk of getting lost, injured, or worse. By preventing altitude sickness, you also reduce your risk of requiring search and rescue assistance due to an injury or navigation issues.

CAMPAIGN GOALS:

  • Build awareness about the threat of altitude sickness in Colorado
  • Educate the public about AMS prevention, recognition, and treatment.
