Joel Tovar Remains Recovered SAR

Missing Hiker’s Body Found and Recovered After Major Four-Day Search Near Pikes Peak

TELLER COUNTY, COLORADO – The remains of Joel Tovar, a missing hiker, were recovered on January 2, 2025, following a rigorous four-day search in rugged terrain near Horsethief Falls on the western slope of Pikes Peak. The operation, led by the Teller County Sheriff’s Office and involving Teller County and El Paso County Search and Rescue teams, culminated in a coordinated recovery from a steep rock formation approximately 400 feet southeast of the falls.

Fifteen SAR members, joined by two Teller County Sheriff’s deputies and the deputy coroner, navigated the challenging, snow-covered trail to reach the recovery site. Halfway up the trail, two snowmobiles provided transport assistance before being left on standby near Horsethief Falls. From there, teams broke a new trail through shifting terrain and made the final climb to the rock formation where Mr. Tovar’s remains were located on a secluded ledge.

The recovery required meticulous coordination. Teams were divided to manage the technical aspects of the operation: one group secured the site from above, another prepared and stabilized the remains, and a third managed the descent. Using anchored ropes, the remains were lowered with care to the base of the formation. SAR members then affixed additional ropes to safely navigate the steepest portions of the descent back to the trailhead.

The Teller County Coroner’s Office has taken responsibility for the remains for further investigation and identification. Mr. Tovar’s family has been notified, and authorities have requested respect for their privacy during this difficult time.

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the dedication of the SAR teams and the community support shown throughout the search effort. “We would like to recognize the incredible efforts put forth by the Teller County and El Paso County Search and Rescue Teams to bring closure to this unfortunate incident,” the office shared in a statement.
