Osprey Talon 22 Review: Still Great After 5 Years in Colorado

After five years and over 60 ascents, my Osprey Talon 22 Backpack has become more than just a piece of gear; it’s a trusted companion on every adventure. From hiking and climbing to camping and everyday use, this backpack has proven its mettle in a variety of conditions, with only a hint of wear and tear.

Here’s a comprehensive Osprey Talon 22 review based on my extensive experience over the past half-decade with it.

Table of Contents

Durability and Longevity

The Talon 22’s resilience is remarkable. After half a decade of rigorous use, it has maintained its integrity and functionality with minimal signs of wear. This is a testament to Osprey’s commitment to quality and durability. Whether it’s been strapped to my back while scaling a 14er or tossed in the back of a car for a weekend getaway, it has withstood the test of time and elements. The only thing that has broken over the past 60 months is one of the zippers; However, they provide a spare, so it literally did not impact me at all.

Functionality: More than Meets the Eye

One of the standout features of the Talon 22 is its intelligent design, balancing capacity with comfort. It’s the perfect size for day trips, especially for ambitious 14er ascents where efficiency is key.

I’ve used it for 34 different peaks on 65+ ascents and wouldn’t change a thing! Here are some of my personal favorite features for peak baggers:

Favorite Peak Bagging Features

  • Helmet Attachment: As a climber, the helmet attachment feature has been a game-changer. It allows for easy and secure helmet storage, ensuring that safety equipment is always within reach without compromising on space.

  • Trek Pole Holders: The trek pole holders are ingeniously designed for quick access. This feature has been particularly useful during hikes where varying terrain calls for intermittent use of trekking poles.

  • Capacity: At 22 liters, the backpack hits the sweet spot for day trips. It’s spacious enough to carry essentials – from extra layers to food and hydration – without feeling bulky or overbearing.

  • Adaptability: I found the Talon 22 easy to modify or customize to meet my needs, like strapping my snowshoes to the exterior for winter hikes, adding radios and my SPOT device with carabiners, and using my own water bladder instead of the Osprey brand system. It all worked great!

Comfort: A Cut Above the Rest

Osprey’s signature design elements shine in the Talon 22. The back panel and straps provide excellent ventilation and support, reducing fatigue on longer treks. Even when fully packed, the backpack’s weight distribution is impeccable, ensuring comfort throughout the journey.

Versatility: Not Just for the Trails

The Talon 22 isn’t confined to the outdoors. Its sleek and unassuming design makes it a suitable choice for daily use. I’ve used it for everything from carrying my laptop and work essentials to a quick grocery run. Its versatility is a huge plus, making it a great investment beyond just outdoor activities.

Osprey Talon 22 Review: My Verdict

When all is said and done, this backpack is a workhorse and one of the best I’ve ever had. It has gone through blizzards, rainstorms, and baked in the high-altitude sun with little wear and tear to show for it all. If you want a dependable day pack with helpful features and minimal weight, you cannot do better than the Osprey Talon 22. Buy this backpack; You won’t regret your decision.

Where To Buy the Talon 22

You can buy the Talon 22 from multiple retailers. While you can get it directly from Osprey, I recommend becoming an REI member and buying it there. Co-op members get 5% back in store credit on all purchases – which saves you $8 on the $160 price.
