My Experience with the 5 Watt Radio

Upon unboxing, the radio’s build quality was immediately noticeable. It felt robust and well-constructed, with a reassuring weightiness. During the climb on Wetterhorn Peak, its performance exceeded my expectations. Communication was clear and the range was impressive, even in the mountainous terrain.

My partner and I split up to test the radio’s performance along a ridge and next to several rock walls and I was surpised by how well the signal stood up to the rugged terrain. This would be a very good tool to have with you if you needed to split up on a 14er due to an emergency or approaching bad weather.

While the Mountain Radio is still a fantastic two-way radio that works for most situations, this 5 Watt radio is a big step up, especially for those who spend multiple days in the backcountry and plan to get wet while boating or fishing.

My Favorite Features

Here are a few of the specific things that stood out to me while using the 5 Watt Radio.

Ease of Use

The Rocky Talkie 5 Watt Radio is incredibly intuitive and user-friendly. Even without reading the manual, I was able to quickly figure out how to operate it. The buttons are easy to use and well-labeled, and the display is clear and easy to read.

Signal Range

The range of the radio was a standout feature. Even in the mountainous terrain of the San Juans, the 5 Watt radio maintained a strong and clear connection over surprising distances. This is a significant improvement over the previous model.

Weather Reports

The National Weather Service reports were a great feature during our climb. The radio updated us with the weather conditions for our location, which is extremely useful when you’re out in the mountains and weather can change quickly. Being prepared for sudden changes in weather can be a literal lifesaver.

Gator Clip

The Gator Clip is an excellent addition, providing a secure way to attach the radio to a backpack or harness. It remained firmly in place throughout the climb, even during more strenuous parts of the ascent.

Battery Life

The battery life of the 5 Watt Radio was excellent. I used it extensively over two days and the battery indicator barely moved. This gives me confidence that it would last for a multi-day trip without needing to recharge.

Durability

The radio proved to be incredibly durable. It withstood a few accidental drops on the rocky terrain without any visible damage or reduction in performance. This is a testament to its robust construction, which is essential for outdoor gear.

Minimal Size/Weight

While the 5 Watt Radio is slightly larger and heavier than the previous model, this was hardly noticeable during my climb. The radio feels compact and the weight is still very manageable, even for long treks. The sturdy construction also means it’s unlikely to get damaged, even if you’re carrying a heavy pack.

The 5 Watt Radio is only available from its makers, Rocky Talkie. You won’t find this walkie talkie on Amazon or on the shelf at REI. Don’t forget to take advantage of my 10% off promo code (scroll down to see it!).
