PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO – A 78-year-old hiker was found deceased on the Conundrum Creek Trail after a search and rescue operation was launched when he failed to return from a planned hike. The Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received the initial report on the morning of October 3, 2024, at approximately 11:00 a.m., after the hiker’s concerned contact reported him overdue.
Deputies from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Conundrum Creek Trailhead, where they located the missing individual’s vehicle, signaling his intention to hike the popular backcountry trail. Given the nature of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office quickly called for the assistance of Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA), a local volunteer search and rescue team.

A total of 23 volunteer rescuers from MRA joined the effort and began searching the trail area. After roughly one hour of searching, the rescue team found the hiker’s body approximately one mile from the trailhead, off the main path. The details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain under investigation by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by hikers, even on well-established trails like Conundrum Creek, which is known for its rugged beauty and high-elevation terrain.
