SAGUACHE COUNTY, COLORADO – Late on November 17, a hiker in distress near Willow Lake in the Sangre de Cristo range prompted a complex overnight rescue operation involving multiple agencies. The hiker, who set out earlier that morning for a five-mile trek, became immobile due to extreme cold, exhaustion, and signs of acute mountain sickness.
The trek ended up taking him 10 hours – much longer than planned, arriving at the lake well after dark. While he planned to camp there, he eventually decided to call for help after experiencing significant cold temperatures.
The Alamosa Volunteer Search and Rescue (AVSAR) team was called in to assist Saguache County Search and Rescue (SAGSAR). After assessing the situation, AVSAR Incident Command secured the help of REACH 71, a helicopter crew based in Alamosa, to expedite the extraction.
Around 2:30 a.m. on November 18, REACH 71 attempted a direct extraction but was unable to locate a suitable landing zone using night vision equipment. Instead, two AVSAR team members were inserted on foot at 3:00 a.m., reaching the hiker 30 minutes later.

The hiker, clad in trail running shoes and multiple layers, was borderline hypothermic and unable to walk. Rescuers provided warming pads, hot liquids, and a fire to stabilize his condition. Despite improvement, he remained unable to hike out. Incident Command coordinated further helicopter support and prepared for a potential five-mile carryout, with assistance from teams across Colorado.
At 10:30 a.m., REACH 71 successfully extracted the hiker and transported him to safety, where he declined further medical care, citing significant improvement. The helicopter crew also evacuated the two rescuers and the hiker’s gear. The mission concluded at noon on November 18.

Lessons Learned and Safety Reminders
The challenging conditions highlighted critical takeaways for outdoor adventurers:
- Weather Awareness: Be prepared for sudden changes in conditions, especially in alpine regions like the Sangres.
- Gear Matters: Trail running shoes are unsuitable for deep snow and freezing temperatures. Opt for insulated, waterproof boots.
- Know Your Limits: Turn back if conditions surpass your skills or equipment.
- Test Your Gear: Ensure all equipment, such as stoves, is operational before setting out.
