Why trust this matcher

Matched by climbers — not an algorithm guessing

The Next Summit exists to help people explore Colorado's mountains safely and tread lightly. This matcher runs on our own route data and one rule we never break: it won't send you to a peak above the experience level you choose. The mountains are unforgiving — we'd rather match you with the right summit than the hardest one.

Frequently asked questions

How does the matcher decide which 14ers to recommend?
It scores all 58 Colorado fourteeners against your answers — difficulty (class), distance, exposure, drive time, your vehicle, crowds, and whether you're bringing a dog — then ranks the best fits. The numbers come from our own route guides and our "14ers Ranked by Difficulty" research.
I'm a total beginner. Is this for me?
Absolutely — it's built for exactly that moment. Choose the gentlest option and you'll only ever see Class 1 walk-ups on good trails. The tool will never push you toward a peak above the comfort level you pick.
What do the class ratings (1–4) mean?
Class 1 is hiking on a clear trail. Class 2 adds easy rock and light scrambling. Class 3 is steeper scrambling where you'll use your hands and a fall could be serious. Class 4 is exposed, near-vertical scrambling for experienced climbers. The matcher uses your comfort with these as a hard ceiling.
Do I need to be in great shape to climb a 14er?
You need a baseline of fitness, but there's a big range — some peaks are under 6 miles, others are 20+. Tell the matcher how big a day you want and it will steer you toward realistic options. Always build up gradually and respect the altitude.
Is it really free? What do I get by email?
Yes, completely free. Your #1 match shows on the page; enter your email to unlock and save your full ranked shortlist with route links. You'll also get our occasional mountain-safety and trip-planning tips — unsubscribe anytime.
Are these recommendations a guarantee I'll be safe?
No tool can promise that. Your matches are a starting point — always read the full route guide, check current conditions and the forecast, carry the Ten Essentials, and turn around if anything feels wrong. You are responsible for your own safety in the mountains.
